Customs, taxes, and duties

When you send a package to another country, you do not only pay for transportation: customs in the destination country can charge taxes, duties, and other import fees.

Knowing and configuring these charges correctly helps you:

  • Avoid surprise charges at delivery.
  • Reduce delays and failed deliveries.
  • Show clear final prices to your customers.
  • Avoid returns or holds at customs.

Duties and customs taxes are charges applied by customs authorities when a product enters a country.

These charges are calculated based on:

  • Product type (category or classification)
  • Declared value
  • Destination country regulations
  • Route and carrier selected

For the shipment to be delivered, these charges must be paid. Depending on the option you select in Envia.com, the charges can be paid:

  • In advance (prepaid)
  • At delivery
  • After delivery (billed to the sender)

Configuring correctly who pays taxes and duties in Envia.com has a direct impact on the delivery experience. An incorrect configuration can cause operational incidents and inconvenience for the recipient.

This helps you avoid:

  • Unexpected charges for the recipient.
  • Delivery delays.
  • Packages rejected by the customer.
  • Holds or returns at customs.
  • Unexpected later invoices.

Duty payment options on an international shipment

In Envia.com you can choose how and when customs charges are paid on international shipments. The available options depend on the carrier, the route, and the destination country.

Envia.com automatically shows only the compatible options during checkout or in the carrier configuration.

Section titled “1) Envia Guaranteed (Prepaid) — Recommended”

Pay now. Customs charges are paid in advance and the amount is guaranteed.

With Envia Guaranteed:

  • Charges are calculated in advance.
  • They are paid during checkout.
  • The amount shown is the final amount.

The recipient:

  • Receives the package with no additional payments.
  • Will not have surprise charges at delivery.

This option significantly reduces:

  • Delivery delays.
  • Failed deliveries.
  • Rejections due to unexpected charges.

Envia Guaranteed option on the shipment

Pay later. The recipient covers customs charges at delivery.

With this option:

  • No charges are paid in advance.
  • Customs calculates the final amount when the shipment arrives in the destination country.
  • The recipient must pay before receiving the package.

Important considerations:

  • The final amount is not known at checkout.
  • The customer may reject the package.
  • There is a higher risk of delays or failed deliveries.

DAP tax on the international shipment

Pay later. Customs charges are billed to your account once the shipment is delivered.

With this option:

  • You do not pay in advance
  • Charges are billed to your account after the shipment is delivered
  • The final amount can vary if it was estimated

Tax paid by the sender

During checkout or carrier configuration, choose the option that best fits your operation:

  • Envia Guaranteed (Prepaid): if you want clear costs and fewer incidents. (Recommended)
  • The recipient pays on delivery: if you prefer the customer to cover the charges.
  • Sender billed after: only for specific operational needs.

Envia Guaranteed is not available for all carriers or all destinations. The option depends on the carrier, the route, and the service.

Today you can find Envia Guaranteed on international shipments with carriers such as DHL, UPS, and FedEx when the quote allows it. That does not mean it applies to all of their services or destinations.

  • If the option appears during checkout or when you generate the shipment, that carrier and route support prepaid, guaranteed duties and taxes.
  • If it does not appear, that combination does not allow a guaranteed customs calculation.
  • For it to be calculated, declare the products in the shipment with their tax information.
